Reconnecting With Our Purpose

A New Chapter for Bord‑Aire’s Board

As we approach this year’s Annual General Meeting, something feels different, in the best possible way. For the first time in a long time, we’re not just preparing for another routine AGM. We’re preparing for a reset. A refocus. A return to what community centre boards were always meant to be.

Over the years, like many centres across the city, our board slowly shifted into a pattern of monthly meetings, rental discussions, and administrative tasks. Important work, yes, but not the heart of a community centre. Not the reason these boards were created in the first place.

A community centre board should be a group of neighbours dreaming together, building together, and creating opportunities that bring people closer. It should be hands‑on, collaborative, and deeply connected to the people who walk through our doors. It should be about programs, events, accessibility, and belonging, not just paperwork.

This year, we’re making intentional changes to get back to those roots.

A New Structure: More Collaboration, Less Hierarchy

To support this shift, we’re moving away from traditional board titles outside of the executive team. Instead of dividing responsibilities into rigid roles, we’re embracing a collaborative model where board members work together on projects, programs, and community initiatives.

This means:

  • No more long lists of titles that don’t reflect the work

  • No more silos

  • No more “that’s not my role”

Instead, every board member becomes part of a shared effort; planning events, supporting programs, helping with outreach, and contributing to the growth of the centre.

And because this is a working board, not just a meeting board, each member will commit to 20 hours of volunteer work throughout the year, outside of monthly meetings. That’s less than two hours a month, but together, it creates real impact.

Leadership That Believes in This Vision

This new structure isn’t just a change in titles; it’s a change in culture.

A change toward shared responsibility. Shared creativity. Shared pride in what we build together.

Executive Roles Open for Nomination

As part of this transition, two executive positions will be open for nomination at the AGM:

  • Secretary

  • Vice President

If you’re organized, community‑minded, or excited about helping guide the direction of the centre, these roles might be a perfect fit. And if you’re unsure, come anyway. You might surprise yourself.

Why This AGM Matters

This isn’t just another meeting. This is a turning point.

We’re rebuilding a board that reflects the heart of the neighbourhood, one that prioritizes accessible programs, meaningful events, and a centre that feels alive and welcoming to everyone.

We want people who care. People with ideas. People who want to see Bord‑Aire thrive. People who believe a community centre should be more than a building, it should be a hub of connection.

If that sounds like you, we hope you’ll join us.

This is your community. This is your centre. And this is your moment to help shape its future.
